Early - A to Z blog challenge

Early to bed
Early to rise

-Ben Franklin

When I had a business, I was a morning person, up early and at the office by 8:00 most days and sometimes earlier during the busy tax season. I have had a few workamping jobs, but the start times were a little later.

I have not worked since September and I have been staying up late and then sleeping in.  I need to get back to a regular morning schedule.

What do you think of the theory that reading a laptop or smartphone late at night/in bed can cause insomnia or affect your eyesight? The bright lights on these devices make it easier to just keep reading and stay awake later and later. I found that I was staying up very, very late and did not feel tired and did not realize how late it was.

Last week I started to use tinted reading glasses and I again feel sleepy while reading the computer late at night, similar to reading a real book before bed.

My next workamping job is coming up in about 5 weeks,
and I am scheduled to work from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Time to get back to early to sleep and early to rise.

  1. I've always liked that expression. It makes me feel okay about going to bed at 8 pm and waking up at 3.

  3. I'm not sure, but I do think that using the computer late at night keeps me awake even longer, too often nearly until dawn. Not terribly healthy and certainly doesn't make for a productive day. (but, I keep doing it anyway. I'm going to have to work on changing that now that spring is here).

  4. I have alway read in bed. I don't get very far before fall asleep. I have the Kindle White Paper and it isn't a glaring light so no problem, fall right off to sleep.
I used to start work at 7 am so I had to leave my house at 6:15 am. Now I get up between 6 - 6:30 to walk the dog and drink some coffee. Not that jump up and get moving girl of old. :)

  5. I definitely feel I suffer from having the phone right next to the bed. The work trip I've been on the past six months has had numerous colleagues coming over to San Diego from the Netherlands, and everyone has been complaining of the serious jet lag. The only advise I can give is, no matter how early you wake up, stay in bed, keep the lights out, and your eyes closed. Do NOT reach for the phone and start checking emails, etc. Force yourself to just lay in bed, and when 5:30 or 6AM come around, then you can get out of bed and get ready for work. It does seem to work!

  6. Though I rarely do it, I have found that turning off the computer a half hour to an hour before bed does affect how quickly I fall asleep. And I love getting up earlier now that we have more hours of daylight- finally!

  7. OUCH! 7 AM? You're a better person than I, Charlie Brown! I have the computer on until I go to bed, and then I have my Sirius XM radio and a little speaker next to my pillow. Both have those LED lights. I turn them around and upside down to diminish the light. I think it does make a difference. I turn my cell phone to Airplane mode so I don't hear e-mails coming in, and put it face down, but nearby just in case I need it during the night.

Yeah, I think it does make a difference. But I don't worry about it because I can sleep in until I wake up, no matter how late. One of the nice things about being retired and on the road. No one to wake me up. :)
