Balmorhea State Park

Balmorhea, TX  Main Street

Monday and Tuesday
March 5 and 6, 2012

Balmorhea State Park is not a large park.
The attraction of this park is the huge spring fed swimming pool.
There are not any hiking trails in the park.

There are ducks and fish in this "pool"

The pool is "U" shaped

One side of the pool is from 20' to 30' deep
and is used for scuba diving.

The water from the spring is also used for irrigation in the community.

The weather was in the 80's.
There is not much shade in the park.
It started to cool down around 5pm.
It was then comfortable enough to sit outside
and to go for a bike ride around the park.

Balmorhea is at the foothills of the Davis Mountains

  2. Looks like you've got the place all to yourself. Very nice! Great pictures.

Is the water a year round 72 or 73 degrees like in other springs? If so, and they allow it, a full moon swim sounds grand!

  3. I have a long history with Balmorea. My parents took me there the first time way back in the 50's. I even qualified there for my scuba certification. (in the middle of January) It even has it's own unique species of fish. I love it there.

  4. Looking kind of empty at the park. Too bad about no shade. Yet has a beauty of its own. Going to Big Bend?

  5. I swam in the pool when I stayed at Balmorhea last year. It was very fun. The winds were strong and my towel and I were completely dry by the time I got back to my rig.
