BYOB

BYOB...ottle!

Grand Canyon National Park will eliminate the in-park sale of water packaged in individual disposable containers by March 10, 2012. The waste associated with disposable bottles comprises an estimated 20 percent of the park's overall waste stream and 30 percent of the park's recyclables.

Reduce, Reuse, Refill!

Free water stations are available throughout the park to allow visitors to fill reusable water bottles-which are available at all Grand Canyon Association bookstores!

I think this is a great idea
and wonder if any of the other parks
 are doing the same thing.

  1. More of them are thinking about it. I think both Bryce and Zion.

I like the idea of less plastic. However it will mean visitors without bottles paying $10-15 for a re-useabe bottle, and some won't. Rangers will have to be even more vigilant reminding visitors to drink water.

While at Mesa Verde I spent a lot of time talking about dehydration and elevation sickness.

  2. That plan looks good on paper. I've always carried my own refillable water bottle, but I think Gaelyn is correct about rangers having to remind folks to hydrate.

  4. This is a GREAT idea!! Hope the buyer for the park store is up to date on what plastics are no nos for bottles to drink out of. People want cheap prices but with that you get chemical problems.

  5. Excellent idea. I am glad to see them implement the new policy. I hate seeing the litter and trash caused by careless people.

  7. I have been refilling bottles for years. Glad to hear they are doing this at the Grand Canyon. It would be great if they went nation wide with this.

  8. I just hear on the radio that a state park in southern Az is going to start this (can't remember which one). People are so used to the convenience of picking up a bottle of water that it will take a while to be common place

  9. I too think it's a good idea. But are people allowed to bring in their own drinking bottles to use or do they have to buy park issued ones? I hate litter, so in that regard, it's good. But I also want to be able to use my own bottles.
